The human brain is smaller today than it was twenty thousand years ago. Not metaphorically, but measurably, by about the volume of a tennis ball, and it is still shrinking. Professor Michael Crawford has spent fifty years explaining why, and his answer is not genetic. The answer is the lack of a single fat - DHA, an omega-3, found in seafood.

DHA makes up the signaling architecture of every neuron we own, and the brain is so dependent on it that it has used nothing else for this job in six hundred million years of evolution. No DHA, no brain.

What Dr. Crawford has argued since 1972, across more than three hundred papers is that it was not our genes that built our extraordinary brains, but DHA drawn from the sea. It's why, he says, our ancestors could only have become human beside the water, where DHA was abundant, and why the modern retreat from seafood toward seed oils and processed food maps almost exactly onto rising rates of depression, autism, and dementia.

He also makes the case that DHA behaves like a semiconductor inside our head, that the official advice to limit fish in pregnancy has harmed generations, and that the dementia people fear in old age may be set in motion before they are born.

What makes the conversation land is that Dr. Crawford is 97 years old, lucid, and still doing research. He clearly knows something about the brain - the proof is in the pudding! He has authored the popular book The Shrinking Brain: Mental Health is affected by poor Brain Nutrition, has advised the WHO and FAO, and holds Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun for this exact body of work. He has been warning about this since 1972, when his own book on the subject prompted the line that we risk becoming "a race of morons" if we keep ignoring how we feed the brain. The unsettling part is how long this evidence has been sitting in plain view while the people who write nutrition guidelines have looked the other way.
